Why your rating matters

Rating and review count are among the first signals travelers check before booking. The gap between 4.3 and 4.7 looks small on screen, but it can make a clear difference to click-through and conversion.

Marketplaces also factor reviews into ranking. A high rating and a steady flow of new reviews help your listing appear higher.

How it's calculated

The number of 5-star reviews needed to reach a target rating comes from this formula:

5★ reviews needed = (Target rating − Current rating) × Current review count ÷ (5 − Target rating)

Example: you're at 4.3 with 180 reviews and want 4.6. (4.6 − 4.3) × 180 ÷ (5 − 4.6) = 54 ÷ 0.4 = 135 new 5-star reviews.

Why it gets harder as you climb

As the target approaches 5, the divisor shrinks and the number of reviews needed rises fast. In the same example, a target of 4.8 takes 450 reviews. That's why fixing the causes of low ratings matters as much as collecting new reviews.

Assumptions

The calculation assumes every new review is 5 stars. In reality some will be lower, so the number you need is usually higher than shown. Platforms may also round ratings differently or highlight reviews from a recent period.

Getting more and better reviews

  • A reminder at the end of the tour: A short, sincere request from the guide is one of the most effective methods.
  • A post-tour message: A short email or WhatsApp message sent the same day noticeably lifts the review rate.
  • Reply: Quick, calm, solution-focused replies to negative reviews build trust with future travelers.
  • Fix recurring complaints: Once issues like the meeting point, waiting times or communication are fixed, the rating rises on its own.

Note: asking for reviews in exchange for discounts or gifts breaks most platforms' rules and puts your account at risk.
